Willowleaf Colored Pole butterbean (Lima Bean) The lima beans with speckles are called butterbeans mostly by Southern growers. This is a wonderful pole lima bean that grows between 8-10’ tall. This seeds history is shrouded by the fog of the past, but was saved by John Coykendall, Knoxville, TN Blackberry Farm fame. He got the seed from somewhere in Mississippi. John Coykendall is an amazing seedman and story teller. Linking footways with cultures and someone you should be familiar with. From him the seed was collected by Dr. David Bradshaw (Retired) Horticulture Dept., Clemson University. Southern Exsposure Seeds is where ours came from. The second photo on our site is my Great Great Grandmother some time in the late 1800’s having her picture made (this is before smiling was invented.) in front of some teepees of willow leaf lima beans. I have no idea if they were the white ones or speckle butterbeans, or some variety that is lost in the fog of the past I was talking about.Super productive plants produce consistently, which can be hard for lima beans, pods that are truly butter like when green, but that on the most amazing earthy tones, that matches the beauty of the diversity of the colors of the beans.
